by Federico Galindo (as F. Galindo) and Genaro Monreal (as Mtro. Monreal)
Fourth film adaptation based on the popular novel of the same name written by Alejandro Pérez Lugín, adapted by Rafel Garcia Serrano, that achieved great public success. The latter is starred by a not so young Arturo Fernandez, in a leading man role like a gallant conqueror of women that would be common in his later cinematography, along with the beautiful Brazilian actress Ana Esmeralda as his affectionate love. Here Arturo plays Gerardo , a lazy student who joins others unruly students in the house of Troy, as they get drunk, they get into fist fights and they eventually steal. A sensitive and emotional portrait of university students in Santiago de Compostela. This is a sympathetic and agreeable film of the Fifties, depicting the love affairs and teachings received the students as well as their parties, fights, quarrels , providing an ironical critic to the students habits. A uneven comedy with its ups and downs, that's why the film results to be a simple dramedy about love problems on college youngsters and with no too much interest. I think that more benefit could have been obtained from the nostalgia of the good student days in Santiago but in my opinion, it has remained a mediocre but passable attempt. Of course, the main distraction of the movie is guessing which notorious secondary characters will appear in the next frame, they include the following: Pepe Rubio, Julio Riscal , Rafael Bardem, Félix de Pomés, Cándida Losada, Félix Fernández, Erasmo Pascual, María Isbert, Raúl Cancio, Manuel Gil, Mercedes Alonso, Ricardo Tundidor, Emiliano Redondo, José María Tasso, Matilde Muñoz Sampedro, Manuel Arbó, Licia Calderón, Manolo Morán and of course the always great José Isbert as a demanding, sympathetic professor.
La casa de la Troya (1925) wrtten and directed by Alejandro Pérez Lugín with Florian Rey, first sound version of the popular novel by Alejandro Pérez Lugín, which tells the life of a student who stays in a boarding house. The house of Troy (1936) with Tony D'Algy, Isa de Navarra, Santiago Barat, Paulino Casado, José Cordero, Lia Emo de Echaide, Antonio Soto, this second adaptation directed by Adolfo Aznar but was interrupted by the Spanish civil war, so it was finished by Juan Vila. 1948 version by Carlos Orellana with Armando Calvo, Rosario Granados, Ángel Garasa, Luis Alcoriza.
It contains a colorful and brilliant cinematography by Michel Kelber. As well as evocative musical score by Manuel Parada, including classic songs, such as: Clavelitos by Federico Galindo (as F. Galindo) and Genaro Monreal (as Mtro. Monreal); ¨Carrascosa¨ by Jaime Texidor (as J. Texidor) and M. Texidor and ¨Cántiga¨ (No xardín unha noite sentada), lyrics from the poem by Manuel Curros Enríquez (uncredited). The motion picture was uneven but professionally directed by Rafael Gil . And it was 1959 Ganador Prize of the National Syndicate of Spectacle Best Film (Rank: 3th place). The veteran filmmaker Rafael Gil was one of the best directors in the Francoist period. Shooting several vintage movies , such as : Don Quijote De La Mancha , El Clavo , La Fe , La Señora de Fátima, Aventuras de Juan Lucas , La Reina Santa , La Guerra de Dios , El Beso de Judas . And he made various films about Bullfighting World as Currito de la Cruz , El Litri y su Sombra , El Relicario, Chantaje a un Torero , Sangre en el Ruedo . His worst films were in the Seventies and Eighties such as : A la legion le gustan las mujeres , Hijos de Papa , Y al tercer año resucito , Boda del Señor Cura , De Camisa Vieja a Chaqueta nueva , Las Autonosuyas, most of them based on Fernando Vizcaíno Casas books .
