When I stumbled upon this 1999 Hong Kong movie titled "Gau Wan Ngoc Mung" (aka "Erotic Nightmare"), I must admit that I was initially somewhat baffled that an established actor such as Anthony Chau-Sang Wong would star in a movie with such a title.
But I figured that since it was labeled as a horror movie, then perhaps the title was perhaps just one of those terrible Asian translated titles. So of course I opted to give the movie a chance, as it was a Hong Kong movie that I hadn't already seen.
The storyline in the movie, as written by Sap Sam Chan, was a swing and a miss in terms of entertaining me. Sure, the basics of the storyline was good and there were definitely interesting elements to the movie. But it was just all way too sleazy for me. And it was rather toe-curling to sit through and watch, and this was definitely not something I ever had imagined I would see Anthony Chau-Sang Wong would do on the screen. And I have to admit that I couldn't make it through this movie, not even half of it. It was just too toe-curling and laughable to sit through.
I am sure that there is a market out there for a movie such as "Gau Wan Ngoc Mung"; I just happened not to be a part of that particular target audience. Then again, I've never cared much for the HK CAT III genre. But hey, to each their own.
This is not a particular noteworthy gem in the Hong Kong cinema. Not even by a long shot.
My rating of "Gau Wan Ngoc Mung" lands on a two out of ten stars.
