Rani Rupmati

The first reason to see this movie was historical, as the story of Rani Rupmati and Baaz Bahudar is a legendary folk tale of central India, which is real, although being a Bollywood film it may have cut some corners, but the essence of the story is based on some real facts. One of the main reasons people keep going back to see Hindi films, is the packaging of the story wrapped with some melodious music and this film has three good numbers, one of them being a classic Mukesh song 'Aa laut ke aaja mere meet', which can easily figure in the top 25 memorable songs of Mukesh, then there is a female version sung by Lata too, but the one sung by Mukesh lingers in the mind for a longer time. This film released in 1957 of Black and White era, would be a perfect one for a remake due to its story, location and ample scope for musical songs, in fact it has a good message of communal harmony too, as it is a love story of a Muslim prince with a Hindu girl, both coming together because of music. If there were periodical remakes of Devdas and all happened to be successful, why not one for Rani Rupmati which was last released almost 60 years ago and the current generation hardly knows about it.
