The title makes a reference to tsarouchia shoes, a type of traditional Greek shoe. They were the most common footwear worn by both urban and rural Greeks until the early 19th century. Later their use was limited to isolated rural areas and nomadic populations, and the shoes were seen by westernized urban Greeks as a sign of uncouthness and backwardness.
