The medieval army are The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem commonly known as the Teutonic Order. Its members were recruited from various German states and have commonly been known as the Teutonic Knights, participated in the crusades to the Holy Land. In 1226 a Polish duke -Konrad of Masovia (north-eastern Poland), appealed to the Knights to defend his borders and subdue the pagan Baltic Old Prussians, allowing the Teutonic Knights use of Polish land as a base for their campaign. Konrad has underestimated the German appetite for expansion and conquest- he was nicknamed Konrad the Mad for inviting the German knights. The conquest of Prussia by the Teutonic Knights was accomplished with much bloodshed over more than fifty years, during which native Prussians who were subjugated, killed, or exiled. For years to come Teutonic Order created a monastic state set on conquering the nearby duchies that previously could enjoy vast autonomy under the Polish rule. The conquered lands were colonized by German settlers. In 1308 Teutonic Knight had taken the citadel of Danzig (Gdansk in Polish) and massacred 10,000 of the town's inhabitants.
