Candy & Bonita is a new comedy directed and written by Nienke Römer. This is her directorial debut and she has written other comedy scripts before.
Girlfriends Tilly (Sanne Langelaan) and Marieke (Fockeline Ouwerkerk) are trying to create a female-friendly online sex platform. To bring attention to this platform, they are trying to make a porn movie, which visitors can watch for free at launch. For this, the two go undercover with the names Candy Ass and Bonita Tequila. The two now have to arrange a film crew and cast, who can work with them on the film.
The fact that this is Nienke Römer's first directing work can unfortunately be seen in the film itself. The film, independent directing and writer still seems to have been too much work for her first time. She ended up with a somewhat messy and less detailed film. The comedy thus remains more on the safe side and often ends predictably rather than really funny.
Furthermore, this film is also reminiscent of the film Zack and Miri make a porn, which can make this film seem a bit unoriginal. The film also has the misfortune of being released after and at the same time as two other comedies, which also feature off-the-wall humor. The films No Hard Feelings and Joy Ride also play it less safe, so that there is more to laugh at the other films instead of this one.
Thanks to the lesser script, the actors don't get much to work with either. Sanne Langelaan and Fockeline Ouwerkerk come across as good friends, but their attempt to launch a female-friendly online sex platform is less effective and remains somewhat implausible. Jeroen van Koningsbrugge also plays a porn star who is completely unintelligible. Rather than being genuinely comedic, his character comes across as more unrealistic and sometimes looks more like a character from an animation than from an actual comedy.
