Just by chance I was surfing channels on my new Smart TV when I came across this French romantic comedy set in modern India. I was amazed at how bubbly and playful the dialogue was, almost like a classic screwball comedy. At the same time this is a very sensual story. There is a very heated and explicitly adult attraction between the beautiful and wealthy French visitor and her handsome young Indian masseur.
How can I explain why this story grabbed me the way it did? It was so breathlessly adventurous and fun. The way the plot is thrown about in such a silly way took me by surprise. The pretty French girl is carrying around an urn filled with her mother in law's ashes, hoping to have them scattered in India. But then some poor street kids steal the urn! And off they go, the pretty tourist and her playful masseur, running up and down the alleyways, searching for the urn. There's a little insight into the poverty and over population in India, but not much. The emphasis is on how much these two people like each other. Reality sort of takes a back seat. It ought to be stupid, and it is. Yet at the same time it's sweet and funny and even romantic.
I thought they didn't make movies like this any more!
