A historian and writer named Laura : Leonor Watling is assigned by Father Galindo : Javier Pereira to investigate the strange death of an Agustinian priest who lived in the Sixteen century . Helped by an Universitary young , Sonia : Macarena Sanz , the stubborn Leonor discovers rare tracks with unexpected consequences . At the same time deals with some prestious figures of the ancient University of Salamanca such as Fray Luis de León : Patrick Criado , including a twisted plot that faces old knowledges as Escolástica against new Renaissance streams , as well as the Reform movement versus contra-Reform . Along the way , the dangerous Inquisition is chasing those who don't follow the religious ortodoxy .
This is an agreeable thriller that links past happenings with nowadays events . It contains thrills , chills , intrigue , suspense , twists and turns. An enjoyable but unknown film that wasn't exhibited on big screen , but only made for television with no much success in spite of containing a good cast and adequate production design shot on location in Salamanca by showing impressive biuldings , cathedrals, and sightseeing . As the main and support cast give decent interpretations , standing out the following ones : Leonor Watling as the stubborn protagonist who undertakes a risked and complex investigation resulting in a surprising conclusion , Alfonso Bassave as her friend Carlos Daniel Grao as her suspicious lover Alberto , Joaquín Climent as a notorious University professor and special mention for Patrick Criado who plays the historical character Fray Luis de León, as the film provides some biographic remarks about this important role. As he entered the University of Salamanca at the age of fourteen, in 1541, to study Canon Law under the care of his uncle Francisco. At some point between 1541 and 1543 , Luis abandoned his studies and instead entered the Order of the Hermits of St. Augustine. After a novitiate of uncertain duration he joined the Priory of San Pedro on 29 January 1544. The first record of León as a student of theology is in the matriculation book at the University of Salamanca for 1546-7. He graduated from the University of Salamanca as a licentiate and Master of Theology and in the following year he won the election to the Chair of St Thomas, a chair in Theology, at the same university (Salamanca was unusual in that all Chairs were subject to an election for the position). This was a minor Chair, with a limited four-year tenure. In 1565, he won the Chair of St Durandus, to which he was re-elected in 1569 (he lost it in 1573 because he was in prison while the elections took place). In 1571 Dominican professors Bartolomé de Medina and Castro put forth seventeen propositions to the Inquisition documenting Fray Luis' allegedly heretical opinions. His translation into Spanish and commentary of the Song of Solomon was the biggest evidence presented for their case against him. Another charge touched on his criticizing the text of the Vulgate. And he continued his education as a student of Hebrew and Biblical interpretation at the University of Alcalá de Henares. As a result, he was imprisoned at Valladolid from 27 March 1572 until December 1576, fell ill and remained in bad health throughout his imprisonment. Though he suffered greatly from his isolation and less than desirable conditions, Fray Luis continued to actively write and study during his confinement.
The motion picture was well photographed by Teo Delgado , adequately musicalized by Pallo Cervantes and competently directed by Iñaki Peñafiel. Rating : 6.5/10. Well worth seeing . The pic will appeal to historical thriller enthusiasts .
