...It's melodrama ,lite Ophuls at best , and over the top acting at worst...
The story takes place in a chocolate box Russia ,but they could have located it in France, Australia or Austria. We know it's in Russia just because the characters use roubles and kopecks.
A man,Dimitri, who was spending most of his time in orgies ,seduces his best friend's wife .The unfortunate husband (Pierre Renoir ) commits suicide and the sinner is devoured by remorse .Then he decides to start all over again and he decides to retire to the country where his old mama lives. There he meets two sisters, one of whom he marries (Gaby Morlay).Back in town, all he is dreaming of is a quiet normal life but sister -in-law Katia comes to visit them and urges them to spend a night on the town to attend a concert.Alas the violin player falls in love with Dimitri's wife and the reformed sinner is now devoured by jealousy.
There's a good use of music, notably during the wife's and the violin virtuoso's duet,a trick Frank Borzage would use again (with much better results)in "I've always loved you" .A stage actress,Gaby Morlay was not as lucky when it came to choosing her films.
