This movie is based on the historical event in the Red Army's long march but the description was not 100% accurate: Typically, to glorify Mao and the Red Army, the political propaganda often portrays the Red Army as poorly equipped and numerically inferior force.
For this historical battle, this is not completely true, because although the Red Army is inferior in numbers in overall force, but they are more numerous than the enemy directly facing them across the Black River. In fact, this is one of Mao's successful tactic: using superior force in numbers in a single battle to defeat the numerically inferior enemy that is part of the larger enemy with numerical superiority. After many battles like this, a superior enemy force would be defeated by being eliminated piece by piece in smaller & inferior portions.
