Anyone, regardless of age, must play Killzone: Liberation, because its one of the best action games on the PSP. Picking up where the first game left off, hero Jan Templar embarks on a mission to free Southern Vetka from the iron-fisted rule of the ruthless Helghast. Under the command of Scolar Visari is Metrac, the deadliest new enemy in the Killzone universe. Added to the mix is his right-hand man, Cobar, his loyal trigger-happy Colonel who will do anything to please his master in the most brutal of ways. Will Jan Templar, Rico and Luger (also from the first game) succeed in their mission, or will the Helghast prevail?
Unlike Killzone, which was a first person shooter (and a damn good one at that) this version features a 3rd person viewpoint which makes it a very strategic game as you decide when and how your gonna plan your next move. Also new is the Tactical Command System which allows you to give orders to certain characters (such as Rico) to either attack, hold a position, follow, and even plant explosives. There's even new vehicles such as a tank, hovercraft, and jetpack.
What I like best about the game is its non-stop shooting action and the enemy AI. They will duck for cover, throw grenades, order their comrades to shoot nearby objects (such as explosive barrels) and more. The animation is top-notch especially the CGI intro that shows the ISA and Helghast bustin' it out in combat. I also like the rag-doll physics in the game; for instance when you kill a Helghast soldier, they fall down realistically and when you blow them up, they fly through the air and even off structures into rushing water with a splash...very cool. Its also refreshing that you don't have to worry about giving orders repeatedly to your teammates. When you give an order, they follow it.
The game's audio is great. Gunfire, explosions, excellent voice acting with an engaging military score brings the dark, apocalyptic atmosphere to life. The game is challenging; make no mistake about it. You'll find yourself dying a lot in this game which is really frustrating but with a little patience and strategy, you'll see your way through. Plus, there are various bonus games that allow you to get new weapons and abilities if you complete them successfully.
My only complaint with the game is the story. There's no plot twists or stunning revelations to previous themes in the first game. The story doesn't even go beyond that point. Basically, you're just fighting without any real rationale behind it. Fans who liked the first game's story will be disappointed because of it. Another gripe is that while the multiplayer modes are great, you can't play against the computer or online; only Ad-Hoc Mode. The 1 player game is kinda short.
On the upside, you can download new game content with the PSP's wireless internet capabilities provided you have a computer with broadband internet access and a wireless access point.
Overall, Killzone: Liberation is one of the best action games on the PSP. If you want non-stop shooting action on the go, then this is the game to get.
