Author Ben Macintyre, who wrote the 1998 nonfiction book "Operation Mincemeat" which this documentary is based on, also wrote an illustrated account of the life of Ian Fleming, who'd served in British naval intelligence and has been credited with conceiving this real-life wartime life-saving trick to mislead the Germans about the Allies' planned invasion of Sicily.

The man who never was

Operation Mincemeat was one of the most successful wartime deceptions ever attempted by the Allies in World War 2. The events has already been turned into a film called 'The man who never was' in 1956.

This audacious plan was masterminded by Charles Cholmondeley and Ewen Montagu in 1943 with a little bit of help from future Bond creator, Ian Fleming. A dead body of a tramp originally from Wales but found dead in London and a plethora of faked documents were used and the body was later discarded off the coast of Spain where it washed up and caught the attention of Nazi spies working undercover.

The papers contained within his clothing showing invasion plans by the Allies to attack Greece and not Sicily that convinced the Germans to divert troops and resources to Greece and helped change the course of the second world war.

Historian Ben Macintyre recreates the remarkable story of this deception in a rather carefree and at times irrelevant manner but also uses eyewitness accounts as to how this deception was pulled off but also questions why the Nazis fell for it so easily.
