Partial inspiration for the story came from an episode of NPR's This American Life, called The Year of Manic-al Thinking (Episode 765: Off Course) by Casey Wilson. The screenwriter melded ideas from Wilson's true story about her father who experienced grief or bereavement mania with a storyline she had already begun to develop about an older widower, who was venturing into the world of online dating.
