The late Robby D. Directed this unusual porn feature 20 years ago, and it's been missing from IMDb until I added it this week. Nominally a Kira Kener star vehicle from Vivid Video, it emerges as quite different from the usual erotic entertainment of the day, worth catching by fans who take their XXX movies seriously.
Randy Spears is a military doctor running an experimental program testing a serum on human subjects with sexual dysfunction, and his colleague Janice (played by Kener, cast against type) collaborates on the government study.
These test subjects are held in cells (resembling jail cells) and wearing straitjackets, so we assume they have violent tendencies. Some, like Dale DaBone, reisist being forced to take the serum, adding tension and suspense to the story. Of course, we get to see the results, intense sex scenes attesting to the efficacy of the experimental drug.
Parallel story in Robby's screenplay has the good doctor played by Kener having sexual problems in her own marriage to Cheyne Collins, who neglects her to the point that she asks Spears if perhaps the miracle serum could be tested on him. This rather melodramatic notion is a bit of red herring here, as predictably it is the two doctors having sex with each other that provides the climax of the movie.
With a strong supporting performance by Chloe, a great superstar of the VHS era who deserves more recognition among today's fans (who for obvious reasons remain more infatuated with the Tera Patricks and Jenna Jamesons of yore), the movie does have a solid XXX content, but not interfering with the sustained serious and unconventionally downbeat tone. A very strong final plot twist and offbeat ending attests to Robby's having crafted an admirable, though forgotten, film.
