- CuriosidadesAfter having read the novel, The Pirate's Passage, Donald Sutherland called author William Gilkerson in Nova Scotia about buying the movie rights, saying: "I would like to buy this. Please. This is where I'm from. This is where my heart is. Let me do it."
- PifiasA ship's flag waves in the direction the ship is moving. The reason for this is because the wind that fills the sails pushing the ship forward also pushes the flag in the same direction.

Captain Charles Johnson: [Roy Moehner is about to get busted with his illegal contraband goods] You thought you could dismast us, didn't you, Mr. Gentleman?
Roy Moehner: [Apparently not understanding the Captain's comment] I have *no* idea what you're talking about. Now, get out of my way.
Captain Charles Johnson: [Grabbing Roy by the shirt] Are you goin' swimmin'?
Roy Moehner: [Still confused] What the *Hell*?
Captain Charles Johnson: [Shoves Roy away from the Warehouse] We just blew your ship out of the water, mister, and you didn't even know it, yet, did ya? Well, you're about to find out!
After reading the novel I would say that the movie was inspired by, rather than based on the book, as the main characters are the same, but the plots are much different. The book gives sufficient back story for Meg for the reader to understand the chip on her shoulder. The auto does not even occur in the book. I thought that the plot of the book was far better than that of the movie, so if you liked the movie you should read the book.
