This is undeniable that William Shakespeare and his entire creation attained immorality 400 years back. Shakespeare is ever relevant. Time and Tide wait to listen whatever Shakespeare wrote, be drama or verse. "Romeo" and "Juliet" mere utterance of these two words is enough to impact one and emulate something serene keeping aside the debate of platonic and mundane concord. It is beyond imagination that one can make mockery of the characters created by the greatest dramatist of world literature. But such insensible persons exist.
The new Bengali Web Series Talmar Romeo Juliet falls in this category. Question is: why does a Web Series in Bengali need to use Romeo Juliet in the caption in 2024? What does it mean? It means the level of decline of creativity. The Web Series is not about romance. Interesting fact is Romeo Juliet is not romance. The theme of the Web Series Using cannot justify these.
In fact, Talmar Romeo Juliet is also not about romance. Rather the Web Series projects crime, rivalry and political intrigues more prominently. However, as a crime thriller its acceptability is also lower because suspense seems missing or impacting least. This is true that a parallel theme keeps going along with crime projecting an affair amidst adversity. But calling it romance is not true. Rather, the Web Series narrates relationship between a boy and a girl in a stereotypical manner.
Another important point is its language. There is no coherence how the characters speak. The series uses Bengali dialect. But the way some of the characters speak sounds they are trying to imitate. Rampant use of abusive words makes it boring. Such words do not seem to have relevance in the web series. What does it mean then?
Some of the brilliant actors of modern Bengali cinema have performed in the Web Series. But their performance has not been good. Anirban Bhattachary has really disappointed.
Above all, the title "Talmar Romeo Juliet" is irrelevant. Question remains why Romeo Juliet? The series fails to justify. The series is not impressive and hence not recommendable.
