This documentary series is one of the most inspiring and innovative ones shot in my opinion in the last 5 years. It channels the spirit of Chicago in a way that is very authentic. I was born and raised in Chicagoland suburbs and it disheartening to watch that some one the violence that exist in the inner cities are our stories as well. This series will show the truth of the city in its entirety. The direction is daunting yet powerful and you will find yourself becoming attached to the human beings in this series. Their stories do not stop at the end because the viewer leaves the end of the first season with a since of wanting to know what happens next in their lives. This is a series that stands on such magnitude because it is not about a single issue, this documentary series is standing on the cusp of school reform in the inner cities and a hope for the end of violence all together in the country's murder capital. You will leave understanding the divide this city has in terms of racial and classism issues.
You will also start to question accountability of these issues and question where did the violence in inner city black students begin and why. These are the issues that you will not see represented correctly in the news. This documentary series has genuine stories that are being told. Whether the images become overwhelming or not, it leaves with a realization that for some, these harsh images cannot be turned off from the reach of a remote. These are the realities of a city that is one of the most beautiful in the nation with some of the highest need of reshaping the system of education.
