I honestly believe that this was the first time I realized something in my childhood could be BAD. This was at a time when I was over-obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and gobbled up anything I could from them (except, ironically, the first Eastman & Laird comics, I got to those in my ... 20's I guess, only the Archie comics were in my collection, but anyway). This is the "Making Of" video for the Turtles, in costume and with instruments (including Donatello with a key-tar) playing songs at Radio City Music Hall in NYC (which I saw LIVE by the way and wore out the tape watching the Pay Per View event later... yes, I admit it).
But this... man, this is f***ing lame. It has the sensibility to actually show the Turtles as, uh, 'TURTLES'! There was another 'Making of' Video for the first two movies (it's on Letterboxd you can look it up), but at least that showed the process of creating the Jim Henson animatronics for the suits and the actors were interviewed AS actors, plus the stunt coordinators, director, etc. It was actually useful information. Here, the people talk about the Turtles AS IF THEY ARE LIVING THINGS! Even as a kid I knew this was bull, and it ends on the creepiest note imaginable: after the credits roll and the song over-stays it's welcome ("We're the Turtles, You Can Count on us" it's called), Splinter pops up slowly from under the stage and says "They are definitely happening... musically..." SHRUG. What a lovely and compulsively watchable dumpster fire.
The one positive side is that the Nostalgia Critic and Angry Video Game Nerd had their first (and still best) crossover for reviewing this.
