Lynen was arrested by the Gestapo on 7th February 1943 for belonging to the "Alliance" Resistance group. Repeatedly tortured, he was eventually deported to Germany. After several months of incarceration and two escape attempts, he was sentenced to death at a Military trial. He was shot in Karlsruhe fortress on 1st April 1944 along with fourteen other members of the Resistance.
