Thanasis Protatos is a Greek photographer and filmmaker. At the age of seventeen, he came into contact with photography, for the first time, using a 35mm film camera that belonged to his father. Despite his inherent passion for photography, he pursued studies as an Electrical Engineer. During his academic studies, he continued to develop his skills in photography while also participating in amateur theater groups, through which he became acquainted with directing, editing and writing theatrical texts, as well as acting.
After graduating, he continued his artistic exploration while working as an engineer in the construction sector.
In the early 2000s, he experimented with digital video and image editing software, for the first time . Alongside his work as an engineer, he began working as a cinematographer for small productions in his native hometown.
In 2008, he resigned from his job as an engineer, founded studio VOATfilms, and started producing commercials for small businesses, music videos, and documentary films. Despite having attended numerous photography and cinema seminars and educational programs, he is primarily self-taught.
His films have been presented at film festivals around the world. He has been awarded the prestigious Excellence Award for his feature-length documentary "The Journey" by the Accolade film competition in California, USA.
In 2019, he founded a new studio called Unposed Media, further evolving his work in the field of visual arts as a photographer, cinematographer, and director.
In 2023, he created the collaborative project titled "Whistle Project." The project takes the form of an interactive exhibition that "marries" various forms of visual arts into a common story. The idea is based on the myths of superstition and prejudices in Greek folklore and serves as an allegory on the concept of freedom of expression in the realm of art. The project was supported by the participation of 50 artists from 25 countries, featuring over 100 works including paintings, sculptures, video art, live performances, collages, illustrations, animations, and a short film titled "The Whistle," directed by Protatos himself. The renowned actress Sofia Philippidou also supported the project with her participation.
