“Christy,” a sports drama that features a transformative performance from “Euphoria” star Sydney Sweeney as a female boxer, will be released by Black Bear in theaters in the thick of awards season.
Heading into the Toronto Film Festival where it will premiere, “Christy” was one of the hottest acquisition targets, but Black Bear, which financed the picture, has decided to take it off the board and make it the inaugural release of its fledgling distribution label. The film is a biopic of Christy Martin, a Wbc female super welterweight champ. It’s directed by Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”) and co-stars Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian. “Christy” will be released in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7 and Black Bear plans to mount an Oscar campaign for the picture and for Sweeney’s performance, which is said to be chameleonic.

David Corenswet will dust off his red trunks soon, as a sequel to James Gunn’s summer hit “Superman” will fly into theaters in less than two years.
Director and DC Films co-head James Gunn took to social media on Wednesday to announce an official title and release date for the project. “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
In his announcement, Gunn included a comic book image of Superman standing next to Lex Luthor in his Warsuit, a pretty clear signal that the sequel will continue to focus on Luthor’s antipathy for the Man of Steel. In the DC comics, Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult in the film) creates the suit in order match Superman’s strength and abilities; it seems that after the failure of his plan to use a clone of Superman to defeat him in Gunn’s first film, Luthor has decided that...

Jordan Peele’s fourth film as a director appears to be taking longer than expected.
Universal Pictures has unset the Oscar winner’s next project from its release calendar, which was last dated for October 2026. Peele is currently at work on the film, which has yet to roll cameras, an individual familiar with the project told Variety.
Originally, the follow-up to his 2022 hit movie “Nope” was scheduled to open over Christmas 2024; following the guild strikes, the film was then pushed to next Halloween. Universal had no comment. Reps for Peele did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
As per usual with Peele’s directorial efforts, nothing is known about the movie’s plot, though its been categorized as a horror thriller. But speaking on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in Jan. 2024, Peele said, “I do feel like my next project is clear to me, and I...

It’s been said that several filmmakers at Venice are showing up with their “state of the world” movies. Whether that’s Luca Guadagnino with his take on cancel culture, Yorgos Lanthimos satirizing alt-right-style radicalization, or Kathryn Bigelow depicting our mutually-assured madness in nightmarish fashion, many of our most famed directors seem to be looking at a world in flux and asking: “How did we get here?”

Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have finalized a new multi-year worldwide film distribution deal, which will kick off with the upcoming “Street Fighter” movie, now dated for next fall.
Under the three-year deal, Paramount will market and distribute Legendary-developed and produced theatrical films globally. News of the talks broke last month as Paramount embarked on a dealmaking spree after closing its $8 billion merger with Skydance, while Legendary relished recent box office wins, including “Dune: Part Two” and this year’s blockbuster hit “A Minecraft Movie.”

This post contains spoilers for season 2 of "Wednesday."
When Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) first set foot in Nevermore Academy, she was greeted by Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie), who became instantly suspicious of her. There's a good reason behind this suspicion, as Wednesday has a habit of constantly getting in trouble and unearthing truths that shake up the status quo between Outcasts and Normies. Weems, who believes in harmony and assimilation (while also being motivated to garner a glowing personal reputation), sees Wednesday as a hindrance to this goal in season 1.
But at the same time, Weems begrudgingly appreciates our protagonist's knack for doing what's right, even when it's infused with her own eccentricities.

Sydney Sweeney told Vanity Fair ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival that she will not be discussing her controversial American Eagle ad campaign while on the ground at the annual event for the world premiere of her indie boxing drama “Christy.” Sweeney stars in the David Michôd-directed film as professional boxer Christy Martin.

Ryan Murphy and Netflix are teaming up to tell the story of one of the most infamous serial killers of all time, Ed Gein. That name may sound familiar to true-crime buffs. He's not quite as big of a name as, say, Ted Bundy, but "Monster: The Ed Gein Story" seeks to tell the tale of this highly influential individual. Gein's real-life crimes went on to inspire some of the greatest works of horror cinema ever made, which is something the show is very much leaning into.
An unrecognizable Charlie Hunnam ("Sons of Anarchy") plays Ed Gein in this latest edition of the "Monster" anthology series. The new trailer, which you can check out above,...

James Bond kills more people per movie than Jason Voorhees. In his 24 films to date, James Bond has been directly responsible for the deaths of about 597 people, averaging out to 24.875 kills per movie. Jason, meanwhile, has only directly murdered about 195 people across his 12 films, averaging out to only 16.25 murders per movie. And yet James Bond is seen as a suave, righteous hero, while Jason is depicted as a bloodthirsty monster. Never mind that the odds are greater that you'll be shot to death by a British spy than hacked in the neck by a masked super-zombie.

"Twinless" could've gone in two possible directions. There's a real chance that James Sweeney's film could've become a kind of light-hearted farcical comedy of errors where one mistake leads to another and the problems keep piling up. Or perhaps it could've been something more dark and twisted, akin to this year's weirdo Tim Robinson flick "Friendship." Instead, Sweeney, who wrote, directed, and co-stars in the film, attempts to walk a tightrope in between and have it both ways. It's not always successful, and there are times where the film doesn't seem to realize one of its characters is as, uh, let's say, troubled as he clearly is. And yet,...

Writer/director James Sweeney’s “Twinless” took the 2025 Sundance Film Festival by storm. This mordant delight — about two young men who befriend one another in a support group for people who’ve lost a twin — whipped the Eccles theater into a frenzy with its cuttingly dark laughs and unexpected plot twists. Sweeney’s second feature, in which he stars opposite Dylan O’Brien who plays twins Rocky and Roman, also made headlines when sex scenes involving the two actors were leaked online by social media users off Sundance’s virtual platform. Finally, the quirky and cutting indie is in theaters this Friday, and ready for its biggest audience yet.
O’Brien’s dual roles as both flamboyantly gay charm bomb Rocky — who is flattened in a car accident early in the film — and the grieving and straight Roman comprise a career-topping performance. Meanwhile, the sardonic and calculating Dennis (Sweeney), who, based...

John Belushi. Gilda Radner. Phil Hartman. Chris Farley. John Candy. Robin Williams. These are just some of the comedic geniuses we lost far too soon. Several of these bright lights of hilarity have been honored in the form of various documentaries and retrospectives honoring the memorable work they did before passing away. But now, it's John Candy's turn.

The Grabber is back for more! Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have reunited for "Black Phone 2," which will once again feature Ethan Hawke as the terrifying, child-killing, mask-wearing villain. "The Black Phone" director Scott Derrickson has also returned, as has his writing partner C. When the details of a killing are as grisly as they are in Leonardo di Costanzo’s “Elisa,” which concerns a young woman convicted of kidnapping her own sister, keeping her under sedation for days and finally strangling her and setting fire to her body, the temptation to go sensationalist in its retelling must be strong. Di Costanzo’s restrained, formally impeccable take on this (based-on-a-true) story resists that temptation admirably, although, with a sense that the film is counting to ten before every scene to ensure no visible traces of passion remain, it’s to the degree that a little sensationalism might have been welcome.
Dealing less with the external — and potentially more dynamic — factors that made a murderess out of an ordinary 25-year-old, and more with the incremental changes within her psychology 10 years into her subsequent 20-year prison sentence “Elisa” is an unusual take on the true crime genre.

Sophia Takal is set to direct from the script she co-wrote with Lawrence Michael Levine.
“Patricia Wants to Cuddle” follows the final four contestants on a reality TV dating show called “The Catch” as they arrive on a remote island in the Pacific Northwest, prepared for another week of sleep deprivation, invasive interviews, and salacious drama. Old money vs. new money, forbidden romance, true crime, World War II: Add the Beatles to the list of preeminent fascinations that never go out of fashion. With “Man on the Run,” documentarian Morgan Neville sidesteps any present debate on how many Beatles films are too many, by technically making a post-Beatles documentary, focused on Paul McCartney’s life and career after the group’s breakup in 1970.

The Academy Museum Presents an Opportunity to Experience Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ Like Never Before
When the Academy Museum first opened in September 2021, one of its most popular (and largest) artifacts was the sole surviving full scale model of the shark from Steven Spielberg‘s “Jaws,” lovingly restored by special effects master Greg Nicotero. Four years later, the museum is coming full circle with “Jaws: The Exhibition,” a massive undertaking that opens to the public on September 14 and provides an unprecedented opportunity for a deep dive into every aspect of the creation, reception, and legacy of Spielberg’s masterpiece.
“Our goal in the exhibition space is to parallel the sense of joy, revelation, and discovery that is spurred by the cinema space,” senior exhibitions curator Jenny He told IndieWire. “Whether you’ve seen ‘Jaws’ more times than you can count, or if you’ve never watched the film, this exhibition aims to recollect the movie experience. Stephen King recently spoke to The Times UK and criticized Hollywood’s superhero movies for often depicting baseless violence. In various Marvel and DC movies, entire cities are destroyed without the viewer seeing any actual harm to human life. King, whose dystopian horror novel “The Long Walk” gets the film adaptation treatment this month, does not agree with this approach to movie violence.
“If you look at these superhero movies, you’ll see some supervillain who’s destroying whole city blocks but you never see any blood,” King said. “And man, that’s wrong. It’s almost, like, pornographic… I said [for ‘The Long Walk’], if you’re not going to show it, don’t bother. And so they made a pretty brutal movie.”
Directed by “The Hunger Games” veteran Francis Lawrence and adapted by “Strange Darling” filmmaker Jt Mollner, “The Long Walk” movie follows the same setup as King’s 1979 novel.

“KPop” pulled in an estimated $18 million-$20 million at the box office over the weekend of Aug. 22-24. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but some incremental cash was not Netflix’s primary goal when releasing the sudden streaming sensation into theaters. The simple truth still holds: Netflix doesn’t really want you to go to the movies — Netflix wants you to watch Netflix.

Mere months after sweeping the 97th Academy Awards with “Anora,” Sean Baker is making a tangential return to the Oscar race. The auteur co-wrote and edited “Left-Handed Girl,” the solo debut of his “Take Out” co-director Shih-Ching Tsou, which has been selected as Taiwan’s official Oscar submission.
Like “Take Out,” “Left-Handed Girl” is set in the restaurant industry, following a mother-daughter-daughter relationship in Taipei as the family attempts to open a food business. An official synopsis for the film reads: “A single mother and her two daughters return to Taipei after several years of living in the countryside to open a stand at a buzzing night market. Each in their way will have to adapt to this new environment to make ends meet and maintain the family unity. But when their traditional grandfather forbids his youngest left-handed granddaughter from using her ‘devil hand,’ generations of family secrets begin to unravel.
