"The Gorgon case " is a reconstruction of the events that took place in 1931 in some small Polish town, where 17 years old daughter of the engineer Henryk Zaremba was murdered. Rita Gorgonowa, the housekeeper, lover, and nanny of Zaremba's children, was accused of the murder. I remember that the reviews of the film in 1977 were good, and it still holds its place in the history of Polish cinema. The film is studded with stars, with good and engaging dialogs and memorable performances. It is a must-see movie for someone who remembers actors like Roman Wilhelmi, Aleksander Bardini, Mariusz Dmochowski and many others. Even supporting roles were given to famous actors. But the most outstanding feature of "The Gorgon case" is the meticulous reproduction of the realities of the 1930s. I watched "The Gorgon case" when I was still a teenager, and it made a deep impression on me. I didn't take much interest in the history of Poland between WWI and WWII. So even if I followed all the dialogs with interest, I didn't care much if Gorgonowa was guilty or not, and my attention was shifted from the main plot to the background. It was very interesting for me to see different police uniforms, pieces of furniture, and fashion in clothes. I felt transported to a different world, an alternative form of reality. Of course I saw many historical movies before, but when watching, for example, "Spartacus" (from 1960), my sympathy was too much with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis, so I spent most of my energy following the plot. When it comes to "The Gorgon case" I was emotionally detached, so strangely enough I could see more. I can say that for the first time in my life, I felt the full power of the cinema, and from that day on I started to pay more attention to the background.
