which is extremely easy to do at the first glance. In order to understand this movie, one needs to know some historical facts about China.

The movie is based on the true story of Red Army's long march. The Buyi minority in the remote region of China was extremely backward and like many ethnic minorities in the remote region of China, they still lived in a society of slavery/serfdom, and Dr. Sun's revolution that ended two millenniums of feudal rule of China did not reach them. In the slavery/serfdom society, those who had relatively good living were of course those few slave/serf owners. The majority of the people who were slaves/serfs living in desperation obviously embraced the egalitarian ideology of the Red Army, just like any slave who longs for liberty and equality. This movie actually reflected this historical facts and thus cannot be dismissed as political propaganda.
