Number One orders Dr. M'Benga to get some rest. As he is chief medical officer of the ship, his authority over all medical issues (including when officers need to rest) is absolute. Not even the captain could override his authority. The first officer would not be able to order him to rest.

This is a common misconception. First, there is still a hierarchy on the ship and the doctor is not in the command hierarchy. Second, if there is something wrong with the doctor, someone, like those in command must have authority over him to order him to take a rest which is what happened in this situation.

Pike says that when the crew gets to the starbase, "drinks are on me." The Federation does not use money.

This is an expression. There are many such expressions in common use today that have no relation to anything current but they are still in use. This is a phrase that might still be in use in the future.

Lt. Ortegas stands at her station for no reason other than to make it easier for her to fall and bang her head on the console.

Pike orders Dr. M'Benga to the bridge when Ortegas receives a head wound. Not only was M'Benga ordered to bed rest just moments earlier and was therefore off-duty, there should be a full medical staff on board to handle emergencies. Calling M'Benga specifically would be akin to calling the director of a hospital to treat a patient in the ER who needs stitches.

M'benga refers to the book as "The Elysian Kingdom." The book's cover is clearly titled "The Kingdom of Elysian."
