Another Excellent Season with some Minor Wrinkles

This season was a successful attempt at a hard reset. With Justin Roiland being replaced by any other actor, I feared some of the vulnerability and versatility of the characters would be lost. I'm pleased to say I worried for nothing. By the 5th or 6th episode, I had all but forgotten the change. Dan Stevens really knocks it out of the park as Korvo and his chemistry with Terry (Thomas Middleditch) is fantastic.

I appreciate that they had a deliberate focus on family and individual relationship story lines this season. I love the use of Sci-Fi to make those relationships grow and flourish.

On to B plots. I could take or leave the Silver Cops arc/episode honestly. Even Sci-Fi can't make me care about Glen, though I do appreciate all the little gags about his love for his car and the Fast and Furious movies. I'm sure this will work for someone, I just don't think I'm the particular audience for that kind of side story.

The plots in the wall felt a little thin this season but still exciting. I find myself to continue to be very invested in the characters, especially Cherie. I enjoyed the addition of Montez. The writers subverted my expectations in how he works serve the narrative, and I appreciate that.

Overall, another great season! I can't wait for season 5.

Season 4: Funny, wholesome and wildly imaginative

I immensely enjoyed this season. Dan Stevens was a fine replacement as Korvo. He captured the character's personality, demeanor and attitude fairly well, and his distinctive voice helped Korvo stand out more from Rick Sanchez. Although I probably wouldn't place season four on the same tier as its direct predecessor, it contains far too many wonderful aspects to dismiss. The writing is still hilariously inventive, the characters are charming as ever, and both the Wall and Silvercops storylines remain thrillingly epic. Plus, the Solars really felt like a genuine family this time around. Jesse and Yumyulack have always been my favorite relationship in the show, and this season contains a few sweet moments of bonding between them. This batch of episodes is stuffed to the gills with gags, heart and references that range from Hanna-Barbera cartoons to Gerald's Game. I highly recommend it.

    Season Four Review

I think that despite being "Rick and Morty's" less seen little brother, "Solar Opposites" has been pretty good after a couple of shaky opening episodes. There is an elephant in the room with this run though, as conduct allegations forced Justin Roiland to depart his roles on both shows. Whereas "R&M" went for soundalikes, "SO" goes another way.

After an incident with a voice changing ray Korvo (Dan Stevens) looks for a promotion at work, but it instead goes to Terry (Thomas Middleditch) causing tension between the two. Within the wall, the temperature is falling dramatically, and investigations into why lead to a conspiracy to engage a holy war. Meanwhile Glen (Kieran Culkin) falls in with a group trying to take down the Silvercops.

Divisive as though I'm sure it has been, I love Dan Stevens and I think he does a great job in taking over and 'englishing' up the role of Korvo. He does manage to match the energy that Roiland established but change the character to suit his personality a little. I felt that this was perhaps the strongest season that "Solar Opposites" has done so far. I thought it was certainly the funniest run.

The actual family are left to have unconnected adventures, but the story in the wall again is a season long arc, that features in several episodes and provides yet more lore. The Silvercops story comes back again too, though this is restricted to one full episode. I really like how the series has managed to establish these two mythologies storylines which frees up the family for wackier adventures.

"Solar Opposites" has become one of the shows I really look forward to and I can't wait for season five.
