We need so many more Australian movies, just like this, touching and brilliant, an amazing and great move to watch. I would highly recommend it to everyone. Jane and her team were amazing from start to finish. Such an inspiring movie and the support of women is just what we need in this day and age....
Wow, where to begin? The Edge is an amazing Aussie film that takes on big issues to create a poignant and memorable viewing experience, shot through with a dash of humour. I'll be thinking about this film for a long time.
This is one of those movies where you care deeply about the leading characters. Yes, The Edge is about sport--and it offers insight into athletics, powerlifting, and swimming--but it's even more about the people involved. The leads give powerful performances as three very different women. There's the fiercely-driven and determined Annie (played by Jane Larkin), who pushes herself to the limit to succeed in sprinting, even as her love life turns into a disaster zone. There's Yui (played by Mei Ichinose), a sweet paralympic swimmer committed to honesty and defending her boyfriend. And then there's Sylvia (played by Lily Riley), a First Nations Australian powerlifter who is bold, hilarious, and unapologetically herself. These three and the friendship they develop will capture you heart, whether you love sports or not!

As an athlete myself, I can fully agree that this is an authentic portrayal of both athletes and the Aussie sports story! A wonderful watch and I cannot recommend it enough, to anybody who's ever been involved in sports, (track and field or otherwise), Australian stories, or is just a fan of a good feature film.
Honestly, The Edge blew me away. The storytelling feels real, raw, and properly grounded in the Aussie sporting world. You can tell the script was written with heart and lived experience, because every scene just rings true.
The three leads absolutely carry it - Jane Larkin, Lily Riley, and Mei Ichinose are all brilliant. They've each got their own style and story, but the way their performances bounce off each other is something special. It's not polished Hollywood fluff.
It's rare to see a film that nails both the emotional side of sport and the big picture stuff - identity, belonging, resilience - without overdoing it. This one gets the balance just right.
For an indie feature, it punches well above its weight. Do yourself a favour and watch it.

I used to be an athlete, and honestly I hadn't really considered how different the experience can be for women - beyond the obvious stuff like managing a period. The Edge opened my eyes. It shows, with real heart, the extra layers women navigate in sport: the scrutiny, the double standards, funding gaps, safety concerns, cultural expectations - things I'd never fully clocked. The performances are powerful, the regional setting is gorgeous, and the storytelling is honest without being preachy. I walked away with a deeper respect and understanding and I'm glad this film exists to help others get it too.

- TriviaJane Larkin, who plays Annie Murphy, has represented Australia internationally in the 100 and 200 metres sprint events and has been obsessed with the world of track and field since she was a child. After hanging up her spikes at an elite level, Jane has transitioned into another performance based career - acting. Jane is also the writer, director, producer, and creator of 'The Edge' and holds a PhD in philosophy and literature.
