The characters are strange and what they do and say is strange, almost like whoever wrote this doesn't know how real people behave. This is all too often a problem with Japanese animation, where characters are made into weird charicatures of people rather than actual people.
It tries real hard to act like it has heart but it's stilted and forced in a way that I'm sure melodramatic teenagers will enjoy. I feel zero connection to what is clearly supposed to be emotional and heartfelt because there is none. What attempts to be a mature show with feelings only becomes a teenage melodrama where nothing is scary nor exciting.
There are far, far better shows out there if you are interested in fantasy with an impactful message and gripping story.
As for the animation it's a stiff mix between 2D and 3D that makes me believe Netflix didn't think they had something worth putting money into.
