¿Sabías que…?
- TriviaA cast of three and a crew of five - the filmmakers had planned to shoot this movie in one day. The exterior location was going to be a live location because despite hopes for grey clouds, they were graced by glorious sunshine and the knowledge that on arriving at the beach they were going to find it busy. Director Shekhar Bassi's first concerns for the day, as they left unit base for the location two hours away, were along the lines of the visibility of a ferry and if so would it be big enough to be seen on screen. Sunshine had already ruined any back up of using the sound effect of a ferry foghorn. Arriving on location, sun in the sky and pebbles big and small covered the length and breadth of the beach. the nightmare that sound was going to be was all too apparent. Actors changed. The 1st A.C. prepped the camera. Mateusz Golebiewski, the DoP, fixated on a ferry sighting while pondering his own movements along the pebbles. It was increasingly looking as if new blocking would be required. As the Director, DoP and Sound-woman went up and down the beach it slowly dawned upon them that the tide was rolling in and inquiries revealed this tide planned to start rolling out around 9pm. Damn! Working out a plan B the trio got into a car and began driving to different parts along the coastline while everyone else waited at the original location - no joy! They were back to plan A and were going to have to re-block and use a small sliver of beach to play out the action. Starting at midday, it was not until 6pm that the filmmakers began to capture good takes as the tide began to roll out and afford them the backdrop of the sea and the contrasts to allow for this good one shot movie.

This is one of those shorts that sparks your curiosity and then just holds your attention from the very first shot where you stay with Fahim (Umit Ulgen) as his world opens up. It opens up only to reveal a smaller world and soon we are introduced to the other two characters, making up this triangle of desperate characters, Haashid (Ali Zaidi)and Nana (Yonah Odoom) wanting to survive, aiming for a better life. A beautifully told story and strong to boot, it takes you through the emotional roller coaster of plans and dreams to a complete implosion of said plans and dreams. The actors play brilliantly and are very watch-able. It was only when the end credits rolled that it hit me this was a one-shot, from start to finish, a nine minute story told in a long one-shot. The filmmaker (Shekhar Bassi) handles the material, the actors and the choreography of his film brilliantly. Just as the filmmakers behind Long Branch, Shekhar Bassi directs with a deft touch and has created a strong cinematic short film. The cinematography is beautiful and kudos to the DoP for the hand-held camera-work and use of natural light. The reason why I have only given it 9 out of 10 is because I desperately wanted to know what happens to the characters and we are left with a emotional cliffhanger. It deserves a ten but I will give it a 9 because I just wanted to know.
