Too much

The writers and directors have to stop doing these "special" episodes. Once every few season... maybe.

Trying to be different, as a common occurrence, distracts from the stories.

Just give me straight up story telling; lose the gimmicks.

Ps. Please tell the director that there are visuals other than close-ups. Ie. Medium shots, wide shots.

The obligatory documentary episode

TV shows need to stop doing this. It's the lowest rated episode every season when The Rookie does it. It's gonna be the lowest rated episode for this season. Stop doing documentaries of your characters in TV shows. It's really stupid. Such a waste of an episode. The only thing you can say that's good about this episode is that it's visually stunning, looks great.

A good story wasted

This really could have been an excellent story. But the concept/format allowed it to go to waste. It's as simple as that. Now that there are only 10 episodes per season it seems to me, there isn't time for all these gimmicks. We need good rock solid stories straightforwardly told (which this could easily have been) please.

Really?

OMG, what kind of maudlin horse manure are they peddling? For goodness sake, can we get some actual science fiction instead of these low-rent psychological explorations? Yeah, there are moral and ethical implications to what the Federation does, but anytime your takeaway involves saving misunderstood sea creatures, or whatever the hell that thing was, you're pandering to the most simple-minded sentiments of overly sensitive middle-schoolers. How about hiring some actual writers instead of these clueless hacks?

Not bad but not good too

While I liked the episode the screenwriters of season 3 seem determined to create some of the most annoying characters of star trek since Discovery. I spend most of the episode wishing to take Beto and the wannabe Indiana Jones to the nearest air lock and flush them. So far season 3 is well below the first two season thanks to poor writing.

Trivia
In most episodes the USS Enterprise is normally referred to as a starship. This episode mentions it to be a Constitution-class heavy cruiser, the Constitution-class was first referred to as a heavy cruiser in Viaje a las estrellas III: En busca de Spock (1984), as seen on Chekov's tactical console. Star Trek III also revealed that the Klingons referred to the Constitution-class as a "Federation battle cruiser". The TNG episode Conspiracy (1988) revealed that Ambassador-class starships like the USS Excalibur (NCC-26517), USS Horatio (NCC-10532), USS Zhukov (NCC-62136), and USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C) are also classified as heavy cruisers.

Errores
At around 30 minutes Pike says, "set a course for the system's sun.". The correct term should be 'star', as the word Sun is the name for the star that Earth orbits around in the Solar System.
