    Decent Opening

This was a decent opener for this new season. The story is good, but it was not the best, just feel a little empty.

I have to say i find a little bit unrealistic how Miss Belinda is literally kidnapped for robots and she just accepts it somehow, like it's a normal thing.

I hope the next episode could surpass the expectations, this serie has an enormous potential.

The visuals were amazing, same quality as the first season and i certainly love that.

Really love the endings with that little "taste" for the upcoming episode.

To end this review; i felt like it was nothing new but it was still entertaining.

    That's it.

"Finally, robotic beings rule the world"

The second season of rebooted, rebooted, Who starts with an introduction to a new companion and the setting up of some fun looking season arcs, but perhaps that comes at the expense of the development of the actual episode.

Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) is gifted a star by her teenage boyfriend Alan (Jonny Green). Seventeen years later, the robotic inhabitants of the planet come to Earth and force Belinda to come to the planet, named Missbelindachanda 1, to become their Queen. She is pursued by The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) but through a time Vortex, he ends up arriving six months prior to her and setting himself up in the court. They learn that the robots have enslaved a humanoid species that they used to live peacefully alongside, until an A. I. took control of them.

So, the actual episode, whilst not having anything particularly wrong with it, felt like it had some rather undercooked ideas. The robots not hearing every 9th word is fun but underutilised and the reveals about the A. I. had some potential but again I don't feel the motivations behind the character actions on the planet were satisfactorily explained. However, I do like all the season arc stories that a seeded in this episode. There's the return of Mrs Flood - who is she, and has she moved or does Belinda live a couple of doors down from Ruby? Then there's the business about being unable to return to the 24th of May, what does that mean and how does the episodes final moments feed into that.

I did like Belinda immediately though. I like that she's a different dynamic to a lot of the other companions in that she doesn't seem taken with the idea of travelling in space and time and is focused on getting home. She does though seem to be a little like Martha (the last second companion that Russell T Davies wrote for) in that she's a nurse and has practical skills that can be used in, for example, an uprising against the robots.

Not a classic episode, but perhaps one that points towards stronger stuff to come.

Great way to set the tone

That's how you should introduce a new companion and season. Definitely an intriguing start that can hopefully maintain this tone. A compelling episode that definitely subververting initial expectations into an interesting narrative. While I can admit that the first revelation of the main plot of the episode did make me chuckle by the end of the episode is left me regained my attention. The episode has it's doctor and companion introduction moments while feeling somewhat fresh and interesting reaction that should definitely be enlightening going forward with the season. The favourite moment for me during this episode was the moment between sasha 55 and the doctor that tells you everything you need to know about the implications that come with the trusting the doctor. Finally, I didn't see anything.

    The Robot Revolution

The season opener could had been a catastrophe. Well my cat baled out early!

Showrunner RTD goes for a more conventional opener. Introducing Belinda Chandra as an overworked nurse in a hospital. Next she is the Queen of a planet as she is taken away by some robots.

Only in this planet, robots and humans once lived in harmony until the AI took over.

Luckily for Belinda, the Doctor is on hand as the planet's historian.

The episode contains a bit of everything. Timey wimey, a retro 1960s visual look. Those rockets were part Dan Dare and part Wallace and Gromit. Some word puzzles.

There was a nod to real world issues, the Doctor getting chided for taking DNA without permission.

There was even some fourth wall breaking from Mrs Flood.

It does look like the Doctor and Belinda could be a good match as they try to get to Earth, the long way round.

    Fantastic opener

This was brilliant! A very strong season opener that was so much fun. Really well paced, a great dynamic between Ncuti and Verada. The story was really good too and all added up at the end.

It's so great to have a bit of confrontation from the companion, there is already more depth and heart displayed here that is very welcomed.

It looks so good too, there's a certain scene in the third act where the visual effects just shine.

Intrigued to see how the Mrs Flood mystery pans out and what it is exactly stopping them from returning home. Should be great to see them visiting so many different places without returning to present day earth.

    • Trivia
It was the episode Boom (2024) that inspired Russell T. Davies to cast Varada Sethu as Belinda. She wasn't initially going to have a bigger role, let alone going to be a companion in the show. But during the post-production of that episode, Davies was very impressed by her performance. He started to regret that he didn't write more stories for her, until he remembered that in Doctor Who certain actors had appeared in other roles before they were cast as companions. That inspired him to ask the production team about bringing Sethu back to the show. To his surprise, he immediately got their approval.

When the robots return the Tardis, Belinda asks the Doctor "Is this your Tardis?" However, he had not referred to it by name before then and merely called it "my spaceship".
