Female "empowerment" taking on the form of a storyline involving a much older woman going after a much younger man.
This time though the dude looks old enough to be her grandson.
How much further are they going to push this tired old scheme?
I know old Hollywood was filled with older actors being cast opposite younger actresses, but the plot of the story didn't have to do with her age. And the older actor's character targeting her because she was younger. Outside of Lolita, of course.
It seems like movies nowadays are lazy, with this same old older woman/younger man storyline, but the older woman going after the man is purposeful, and his age is used as some sort of titillating, validating factor.
Funny though when male characters are portrayed with much younger actresses, they are perceived as dirty old men going through a midlife crisis.
When an older woman does it she is seen as "chic" and "liberated." As someone else pointed out on here, what's with the hypocrisy and double standard.
This storyline is becoming real tiresome, but if they want to keep pushing it, then call it what it is. A dirty old woman looking to validate herself by nabbing a younger man. To prove to herself she is still worthy. I mean, that's what women have said about men in the same situation.
Haven't we also heard for years that actresses who age are aging out of so many movies ("unfairly") by comparison to older actors who can still get great roles.
Hardly. In fact, there are a lot of great roles for older actresses.
But why do so many have to do with this theme of hooking up with a much younger man.
Surely there are better parts for women out there that have some substance rather than dummying down to this same old trope.
Let's see some creativity in storytelling. Let's see some storylines where some of our great, older actresses are cast, but there isn't yet another young man involved.
We need to see women empowered through their skills and offerings as successful women. Not just their attempts at validating themselves with younger men.
