The previous episode set the bar too high and was arguably one of the best episodes of the whole show and got me really optimistic about this season..... only for the show to follow up with this awful absolute trash of an episode, I would actually rate it 2/10 if I didn't genuinely love this show as a whole and also because kayla got some serious laughs from me (actually now that I'm thinking maybe Megan Stalter as Kayla lowkey deserves that emmy for best supporting actress more then Hannah Einbinder and Ava.....) speaking of ava, she's been the most unlikable she's ever been in this episode, seriously how could she be so enjoyable to watch last episode and now being an absolute pain in the butt! Besides her being ungrateful and rude as hell to deborah she was also just dumb- Deborah waited her whole life for this moment she definitely knows how to host her show better than Ava.. late nights are supposed to be fun little comfort shows to end the day with and Ava's here trying to make "art" like girl don't piss me off you're not writing an indie drama movie! And the audacity to get mad at deborah? I wanted to shoot her the entire episode.

Last episode did alot of great developments to the season and all of it was flushed down the toilet on this one! This just made all of that progress pointless, it feels like the people who made this episode didn't even watch the previous one. I hate how much I hated this episode because hacks has always been the best comedy series on the TV for me and I don't think it ever had an episode this bad. Idk how can they recover from this but I hope they will.

I've been a fan of this show since day one. The situations and dialogue are irresistibly funny, and the performers are always top-notch. Jean Smart is absolutely wonderful, and Hannah Einbinder knows how to rise to the occasion. One downside, however, in the evolution of the show, and especially this episode (S4E05): I'm starting to find Ava's character somewhat irritating. While Deborah knows exactly the rules of the show and television game (including its most questionable aspects), Ava constantly pretends to know better than her what to do. She comes across as too selfish. Because even though she regularly claims to want Deborah's success, in reality she's looking for her own success through Deborah, to impose HER vision of the show. She works less and less for Deborah and more and more for herself, her own agenda. Stacey (a very funny character, by the way) proves this at the very end of the episode. This development doesn't spoil my enjoyment of the show's excellence, but it just makes Ava a lot less likeable. Her know-it-all and rather capricious side is irritating. And if Deborah has the same flaws, at least she has experience in the job...
