For He Can Creep

Actually pathetic how many reviewes have no idea where this episode is inspired from. It's literally the same exact plot of Master and Margaret by Bulgakov. I would adore and entire series of the same animation for the entire book. I also loved that we got two cat episode this season, really shows how much people are inspired by them.

Thank god for this episode in a series which seems to have been reduced to an animation showcase that offers little more than puerile toilet humour and gore. Love + Death + Robots used to have something to say, but not anymore it seems bar this episode. Not since Felidae's Francis, to which along with T. S. Elliot this may owe a debt, have I been so interested in the adventures of a cat, it is of course in part down to the chamber music fitting for the period in which it's set, but also a sort of authenticity that feels like it is borrowed from sort of historic cautionary tale. It is both very odd and very good, strangely enough the illustration and animation style is the least showcasey of the lot, but not inappropriate. I would like to watch more of Goeffrey's adventure's.

Just as a side note this episode seems to be modeled after a part of poem by Christopher Smart "For I Will Consider My Cat Jeoffry" (Excerpt from, Jubilate Agno)

Jubilate Agno (Latin: "Rejoice in the Lamb") is a religious poem, and was written between 1759 and 1763, during Smart's confinement for insanity in St. Luke's Hospital, Bethnal Green, London.

The poem is chiefly remembered today - especially among cat lovers - for the 74-line section wherein Smart extols the many virtues and habits of his cat, Jeoffry.

His section of Jeoffry is just part of his larger desire to give a "voice" to nature, and Smart believes that nature, like his cat, is always praising God but needs a poet in order to bring out that voice.

In a season full of poignant religious themes, this episode seems like the only where it actually fits and makes sense.

The narrative and style is old English from the XIX century, with their old ideas and worldview, so at least it is entirely consistent with itself, unlike some of the other episodes.

Also, this is a reference to a piece of literature. It just doesn't quite fit with the idea of the series, unless the idea of the series is just "do animation".
