Mrs. Shullivan and I are devoted Toronto Blue Jays fans and although the Jays missed the playoffs this year, we hung in and watched all the American League playoff games leading up to this years World Series. We knew the LA Dodgers had great pitching and a deep bench for hitting prowess. What the Dodgers did not have though was a little spark plug of a second baseman namely the five foot six inch beast, José Altuve. Although the Astros outfielder George Springer was ultimately named the World Series MVP for his five (5) home runs and seven (7) RBI's, it was José Altuve who game in and game out came prepared and motivated his team mates with both his defensive plays and with his ability to hit for power leading by example during the World Series by hitting two (2) home runs and six (6) RBI's.
The pitching on both teams was surprisingly a little shaky and as such, in almost all of the seven games the starting pitchers were yanked long before some fashionably late fans even got to their seats.
Ohhhh, but the fans came to see home runs, and home runs we did see by the bucket loads. Game 5 was most exciting going into extra innings and eventually leading to the Astros taking game 5 and a one (1) game lead. There were wins by both teams on the road leading fans to realize we could take nothing for granted. The Dodgers fought back at home in game 6 to tie the series and force that pressure cooker of a game 7 in Dodger stadium.
The only disappointment Mrs Shullivan and I had was realizing that one team would not be crowned World Series champions, and because the Dodgers put up such a good fight it would have been deserving for game 7 to also go into extra innings but it was not meant to be. So although our Toronto Blue Jays did not make the playoffs we were just as happy to root for the American League Houston Astros to win their very first World Series trophy.
Oh? Did I mention that the Toronto Blue Jays have two (2) World Series trophies?
