As previous film and television depictions of the Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto often had a greatly romanticized approach, this darker portrayal was the first to be closer to the historical truth; Miyamoto was cold, calculated, and more scientific in his approach to sword-fighting. He was an opportunist before becoming a sentimentalist.
