"Bolji Zivot" or "Better Life" is probably the coping stone of Sinisa Pavic's screenplay writing career. It also became a symbol for Serbian TV humorist series style which unfortunately has survived up to present days and continues to push on in many, often deformed, alterations.
Quality is poor, acting is nothing special, direction unimaginative to the least, but for some reason people like to watch "Bolji Zivot" on and on, no matter how many times Serbian state television reruns it to fill up the blanks in programming. Still, with all it's flaws, "Bolji Zivot" has got some story, and at times it can be bright-witted and even original. Yet another representation of an average Serbian family with it's ups and downs in everyday life challenges. The reason for it's popularity probably lies in the actuality of the context, placed in the late 80s Yugoslavia, and the prediction of turbulent times which would follow eventually. It is also a good time machine for those nostalgic for life in communist Yugoslavia, and their numbers are growing by the years.
Did I like it? Can't say that I have, even so, I didn't mind watching it and I still don't. Compared to Pavic's creations that followed, "Bolji Zivot" really looks fresh and smart.
