Oddly enough I have never had the chance to sit down to watch the 1991 Hong Kong romantic comedy titled "The Perfect Match" (aka "Fu gui ji xiang"). Even more so with my fascination of the Hong Kong cinema, and the fact that Maggie Cheung is my all-time favorite actress. But it hasn't been easy to acquire a copy of this movie.
Then I got the chance to sit down to watch "The Perfect Match" in 2021. Did I jump at the chance? You bet I did.
So was the 30 year wait for watching the movie worth it? Well, not really. Sure, I mean the movie was watchable, and yeah it has Maggie Cheung in it, but ultimately then "The Perfect Match" turned out to be just another run-of-the-mill romantic comedy that come a dime a dozen.
While the storyline was pretty straight forward, it was just too bland and mundane. And it didn't really help much on the movie that there was no chemistry between Koo (played by George Lam) and Carrie Kam (played by Maggie Cheung). They were doing their acting jobs, sure, but there was no particular chemistry between the pair on the screen.
If you enjoy romantic comedies, then I am sure that there is something worthwhile to be seen in the 1991 movie from director Stephen Shin. However, it was a movie that was too much akin to so many other movies out there in the romantic comedy genre, many of which with a lot more entertainment value than this one.
Now, the movie also had Shiu Hung Hui on cast list, and he is always a good addition to a Hong Kong movie of this caliber. The movie also had the iconic Lydia Shum on the cast list. and if you have seen Hong Kong movies in the 1980s and 1990s, then you will be well familiar with both Shiu Hung Hui and Lydia Shum. And of course, Maggie Cheung is just a sparkling gem on the screen.
All in all "The Perfect Match" didn't really feel like a perfect match and offered only generic mundane entertainment for me. As such, then I am rating it a bland five out of ten stars.
