Lain Mukaan is a story of a woman who out of greed and vanity sells herself to a rich cartridge.Maria Toikka is a mother of three little children living in Kuopio and she has a loving husband, Ville.The cartridge Oppman has noticed Maria and he gives her ten marks if she will see him in the evening.He promises she will have more of them if she becomes his special friend.Maria, who wants to buy pretty fabric from the store does what the cartridge tells her to do.She becomes a prostitute just because she wants to have pretty dresses.Oppman gives Ville a job and sends him to Kajaani.There he almost gets killed by a gypsy.But he returns while Maria is waiting for Oppman.When Oppman is coming Ville almost strangles him.He is in the court accused of attempted murder.Lain Mukaan (1956) is directed by Roland af Hällström.It's based on the story by Minna Canth from 1889.I just read the fantastic story before seeing this movie.The movie follows the story very well.Eila Peitsalo does a fantastic job as Maria Toikka.Matti Oravisto is marvelous as Ville.Fritz-Hugo Backman is terrific as Oppman.Elvi Saarnio is wonderful as the neighbor Katri.Pentti Viljanen plays the part of Työnjohtaja Peltonen.Leo Riuttu portrays Asioitsija.Leo Jokela plays the gypsy.Leni Katajakoski is Liisa.Irja Kuusla is Kievarin Emäntä and Anton Soini is Isäntä.Veikko Linna portrays Herra.Ari Laine is Puukhollari.Canth was knows from her excellent woman depictions.Here we have this beautiful woman, who has her weakness.She's too weak to say no to the cartridge.She wants to be a wealthy woman and doesn't see what's really important in life.All that comes out also in this movie.
