Before he became a member of the Three Stooges, Joe Besser had a solo career with the same studio which made the Stooges films, Columbia. "Dizzy Yardbird" is one of Besser's solo shorts for the studio.
The previous Besser short I saw, "Waiting in the Lurch", was surprisingly good. Its style was fresh and the film worked well because Besser played the party pretty straight. However, with this film, Besser essentially plays a Curly Howard character...though nobody played that as well as Curly!
The story finds Joe drafted into the Army...which apparently means we had zero standards back in 1950! It's also odd because all the other recruits are older middle-aged men like Besser. None of the antics are all the funny and the film is , at best, a time-passer.
