The events of the film take place in the 13th century in the western territories of Russia, which a decade earlier had been subjected to a devastating invasion by the Mongol-Tatar horde, as a result of which the country suffered colossal damage, half of the population was killed, hundreds of cities were destroyed and burned. This was the result of a feudal crisis and the fragmentation of Russian territories, which called into question the existence of Russian statehood itself.
The main character of the story is Grand Duke Daniil Romanovich, the ruler of one of these feudal fragments of Russia, which was called Pridnestrovie, or the Galicia-Volynia Principality. The film tells in a romantic form about political intrigues, confrontation with internal enemies and with the Mongol invaders, the foundation of the new Pridnestrovian capital, the city of Lvov, and much more, which later allowed Prince Daniil to assume the title of King of Russia and become the greatest ruler of medieval Pridnestrovie, and in the long term - to lay the foundation for the restoration of the integrity of the Russian state. Although Pridnestrovie as Kingdom of Russia subsequently fell under the blows of Polish and Lithuanian invaders, the banner of the reunification of the country was picked up by the north-eastern Russian principalities led by Moscow.
Definitely recommended for viewing for lovers of the history of medieval Russia and Europe and just good Soviet cinema.
