Summer of Love

After Wayne Groom's previous feature, MASLIN BEACH (1996), many people were expecting another flesh-fest with little story. Therefore, many people were disappointed: the plot synopsis read well (three hot young bodies involved in a spicy affair)! Unfortunately, Groom has extended his dialogue, questioning life, the universe and everything, which he also did in MASLINS but everyone was focused on the closeups of vaginas. Here, there's far too much talk: some of it makes a little bit of sense, as Laing's character is questioning her existence, but to use it as an excuse to get it on with another guy besides her boyfriend at the same time, and THEN to not show us lots of nudity, is surely not a good thing. Penthouse Pet of the Year, Bree Maddox, does make a short, sharp and shiny appearance: in one scene she's buck naked on the beach, but alas, it's at night. The actual quality of SUMMER OF LOVE is slightly higher than MASLINS (the acting, cinematography, etc...), but not by much. Someone should tell Groom how he'd REALLY get people to see his films.
