There is a deeper meaning for this movie

What is described in the plot summary was only what was shown on the surface; there is a deeper meaning for this movie.

The hidden message is that people were fed up with the atrocities in the Cultural Revolution, which was blamed on Gang of Four, but actually backed by Mao Tse-tung. By showing their support to Premier Zhou, people were shown their protest to the Cultural Revolution and Mao.

The movie is an analogy to what happened in 1976, when Premier Zhou died, people showed their protest to Mao and his cultural revolution by mourning the death of Zhou.
