Although this movie was made in 1970, it was done in black and white. The reason is that it was produced by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. They nearly canceled the project because they didn't feel they had enough money to do it. However, Reda and the others insisted, and eventually they agreed to move forward with it, but said it would need to be done in black and white because it would cost less money to do black and white.
