Anecdotes
When Sam tells Dean he's Lucifer's vessel Dean says, "Just when you thought you were out, they pull you back in." This is a reference to Le parrain III (1990) when a retired Michael Corleone says, " Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

A Great Cheat

The budgetary restrictions of the network TV make staging the end times rather difficult. This time jump (and Watchmen sets) concept ends up saving a ton of cash by skipping to the world already being destroyed. It is wonderful cheat to get the season the proper dynamic weight within the restrictions of reality. For that alone this is a great episode.

Add in the Edlund has a ton of fun writing the future versions of the characters, keeps the show fairly light (in context) and balancing the needs of this story and the larger story and this is a great episode. I am writing this during Coronavirus mania (early 2020) and I have to say that Chuck line about hoarding toilet paper is a lot funnier now. It wasn't just a gag; it was a prediction.

Jensen Ackles is given a nearly impossible task of merely playing 5 more years of experience and he raises to the challenge. This is on the short list of the best Dean centric episodes.
