Interesting story. Movie is based on true events. Acting was much better then what I expected. It really is not far from reality and quite accurate presentation of events in a war (ww2). However, as so many European movies, it is very slow and dramatizations are way too long. That makes movie lose a lot of quality and waiting becomes boring. If you ever knew and met some guerilla warrior first thing you'll notice that they all have in common is the character. It is quite special type of people. They are direct, sharp, quick, full of energy, brave, proud of themselves, they don't hesitate, quick at making decisions, confident, strong character. You see immediately that they made a decision to give their life long time ago and so during the war you can not see any sign that they are worried. It's like if they forgot that they can lose life at any moment. That is extremely important and it is not shown in this movie. Big miss. Can you imagine how fascinating and intense is the moment when some guys run directly toward the enemy and trying to get through?! Imagine how high is the stress for soldiers on both sides. That is almost not shown in this movie and it is the vital part of the story. Germans of course are again a bunch of stupid uncapable guys just waiting to be slaughtered. In reality soldiers on both sides were quite good and they had very decent even heavy training. In this movie they both look like a bunch of old lazy slow guys. It is leaning to favor the guerilla warriors but I find interesting that it isn't that obvious as most of the other war movies including documentary movies.
So, in the end this movie is not some typical Hollywood unrealistic exciting story neither it is a documentary true real life war events movie. It's something in between. That actually made me feel as if the movie was unfinished in the end as if it is missing something.
What is nice in this movie is that you can see something that is much closer to reality about world war 2 in these parts of Europe than any of those hundreds of communist propaganda movies that have almost nothing to do with reality. This is a rarity. It is very hard to find such movie.
I don't regret watching it but it is far from something that left a big impression on me in any way.
