Verdict
I was never a big fan of the light gun games, I was the right age and right generation but they never did anything for me. Maybe it's my hatred of guns, maybe it's that they felt hokey, maybe I don't actually have the slightest clue.
If I was ever to enjoy one it would have been House of the Dead being that I'm a horror fanatic and a zombie obsessive but even they couldn't win me over though I do remember they were always fun to watch other people playing.
When The House of the Dead: Remake appeared on sale on the PSN store I saw no harm so ventured in and came up with several fascinating observations.
I mean first of all the creature design is really quite great, yes there aren't a dramatic amount but they do look really quite good.
Second it flows beautifully, it certainly didn't to this extent in the original but now in this remake I'm suitably impressed.
And finally, I blinked and I missed it. I cannot believe how short this game is, half an hour and I'd completed the entire game and as it's on rails it's going to be like that for everyone!
The House of the Dead: Remake is an enjoyable experience but it's horrifyingly brief and the replay value isn't great either.
Rants
Remember the House of the Dead movie from 2003? It's been in the IMDB bottom 100 list since it was released and I've never understood why. Let me be clear, I'm not saying it's a good movie, I'm not even saying it's an average movie I'm simply saying it's not THAT bad. House of the Dead is supposed to be hokey and the movie absolutely was! It had some passable moments and some decent cast. Yes it was goofy but man this wasn't among the absolute worst. I believe it's the victim of yet another hate campaign, primarily due to Uwe Boll rather than it being specifically House of the Dead. People need to stop that, think for yourselves, hate campaigns accomplish nothing and just damage the industry. Be an individual, have your own opinion.
The Good
Looks great
Some fantastic design
A lot of fun
The Bad
Way too short
Lazy final stage design
Poor final boss.
