An original story about first love

I saw this recently at the Foyle Film Festival.

It is terrific.

In the hands of another writer and director, the story - about a young boy who has to navigate life between his separated parents, while trying to figure out how to handle his first crush - could have been sentimental mush.

But this is funny, tender and tough.

Often in the same scene.

What makes it so funny, tender and tough is the originality of the setting - the young boy is in a Taekwondo class and so he comes away with bruises and black hearts and perhaps even a broken heart.

The balance and tone is a brilliant mix of all three - very difficult to do.
