My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (2014)
*** (out of 4)
Liv Corfixen wrote and directed this documentary that clocks in under a hour and features the making of her husband's ONLY GOD FORGIVES. We basically get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film as well as the tole that it takes on that film's writer-director Nicolas Winding Refn who of course is the husband of Corfixen.
I wasn't a huge fan of ONLY GOD FORGIVES and thought it to be a rather bland movie compared to the masterpiece DRIVE. It's funny but there are several scenes here where we see Refn nervous about how people would react to this film. For fans of that film you're really going to enjoy this documentary but even if you didn't care for ONLY GOD FORGIVES you should still really enjoy this. I thought it was fascinating seeing the impact of filmmaking and how much drama there is for the filmmaker. I thought the film was extremely good at showing how much pressure there is as well as seeing what other types of things are going on thru the mind's of filmmakers.
Of course, this here is a family affair because we not only get to see the director working but we also see him dealing with his wife and their two young children. Ryan Gosling also plays an important part here as we see him prepare for the film. Alejandro Jodorowsky is also here, which will have his fans happy.
