Commentaire à la une
First solo hit by Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry, "Slave to Love" is mostly remembered for its future visual use on films such as "9 1/2 Weeks"
and "Bitter Moon",
some radio airplay, and a little with this video. Jean-Baptiste Mondino knows how to seel the power and magnitude of fame, style, beautiful women and the
always classy Ferry, but it doesn't quite hit the strong sensuality ideas brought by Adrian Lyne's 1986 film or at least the way some of us perceive
this great ballad.
It's composed in an intrguing manner as the singer exists a plane, followed by the paparazzi, boards a car and in between shots we have the female models lip-synching the song, all alone in their hotel rooms and there's a great deal of us imagining that Ferry will meet with them. It never happens. What does happen is that he's destined to see someone and that's where the plot twist comes from. It might have worked in a cute manner back in the day, for less demanding viewers, but today it feels a little awkward as we aren't given a proper context as to whom that little girl is and why that song's title and notion can reveal about all the other ideas we get from the song.
Yet the song still rules, a classic hit from the artist, though I got a little tired of it - it's way too known, and he has better tracks ("In the Name of the Game" for instance). Mondino's video has amazing memorable shots, all the right cuts and presentation of everything which does not make a date video of the 1980's. 8/10.
