These semi-documentaries about FBI and espionage cases were very popular in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Often introduced by a dry government person, parts of the movie were then narrated, usually by the lead.
Howard Duff stars in this one, "Illegal Entry" from 1949. A man is found in the desert with a tattoo from Dachau - he seems to have been thrown from a plane. (This is what smugglers did when they suspected a plant - rather than figure out the identity, they would get rid of all of the immigrants).
George Brent plays an agent working for the Immigration and Naturalization service. He puts a photo of the man on the front page of the newspaper to attempt to get some information.
A relative of the man calls Brent - before he is knifed, he says he paid $2000 to bring his relative over, and he utters the name Blue Danube Cafe.
The cafe is owned by one Anna O'Neill (Marta Toren), the widow of a U. S. pilot. The Feds go through a list of those who were in his squadron and approach one of them, Bert Powers (Duff) to drop in on her, make known that he is out of work, and learn what he can.
Anna seems very happy to meet him the first time; after that, he gets the deep freeze. He is, however, approached and hired as a cargo pilot. Anna is involved in this smuggling ring, but how? Subsequently it's learned that her brother was brought over illegally, and now the smugglers have a hold on her. Not only that, but the main man, operating out of Mexico, seems to consider her his personal property.
Very exciting ending, and seeing the beautiful Marta Toren, who died so young, is always a pleasure.
